Transforming the UAE into an unrivalled global hub and focusing on how to further develop the country into a regional and global platform for growth, was the main topic of the panel discussion chaired by Panos Manolopoulos, Global Vice Chairman of Stanton Chase International, during the World CEO Investment Conference, held in Dubai on March 4, 2014.  The panel, including Dr Khalid Al Rajhi, Vice Chairman of Al Rajhi Holding Group, Dr Amer Al Ruwas, CEO of Oman Telecommunications, Raza Siddiqui, CEO of Arabian Healthcare and Mohamed Juma Al Musharrkh, Head of Investment, Shurooq, represented several industries from the regional economies, which allowed for an in depth analysis of the opportunities, as well as potential challenges, of the upcoming Expo 2020 project.

As easily expected, the discussion focused on the projected investments and new infrastructure projects that Expo 2020 will attract.  This includes also the creation of more than 300,000 jobs, out of which, at least 50,000 positions will be permanent, thus supporting the increasing efforts for employment (especially of the local population) and entrepreneurship.  Taking these into consideration, Expo 2020 will have a significant impact on the local and regional economies, as well as on the quality of life of the people living in the region.  The themes of Sustainability, Mobility and Opportunity that have been characterizing the growth of the UAE over the past years – as it is demonstrated by its flagship projects and companies – are to be further enhanced during the preparatory period for the Expo 2020, as well as during and after the event.  The panellists agreed that 2020 indicates a deadline for the achievement of an ambitious development, which will be the basis for further creative projects and initiatives in the near future.

At the same time, it was highlighted that the close collaboration of the government and the private sector is required, in order to ensure that this growth will be based on solid foundation of proper governance, legal framework and competitive structure.  Attracting and retaining both financial and human capital is not easy and should include careful planning and implementation.  Ongoing collaboration and mutual support between the governmental entities and the corporate world will ensure that Expo 2020 will really bring the UAE and GCC to a different level within the international arena.

The World CEO Investment Conference was a conference exclusively designed to explore the foundation of future growth based on the Expo 2020 project, and it attracted more than 400 CEOs, Senior Governmental officials and Entrepreneurs from several countries.  Additional discussions included a focus on New Opportunities for Trade and Investment in the UAE and the region, Infrastructure Planning and Delivery in Transportation, Presentation of Dubai World Central, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, and it closed with a Gala Dinner on the 5th of March and awards ceremony.
