Navigating the Channels to a Board Position

Summary of article reported in the Dallas Morning News and the Memphis Commercial Appeal, January 28, 2007 – While it hasn’t always been the case, board service is widely considered as an excellent opportunity for employees to accelerate their professional development. Whereas CEOs used to discourage their staff from sitting on corporate boards, they are now eager to submit the names of individuals who would qualify for companies of all sizes, public and private.

Award-winning journalist Dr. Mildred L. Culp interviewed several executive search professionals, as well as a managing consultant with an executive and board compensation firm to shed light on this change in mind-set.

Dr. Culp’s article explains why time requirements, and Sarbanes-Oxley, have convinced an increasing number of companies to rethink their board compensation strategy, moving away from the usual meeting fees towards a retainer-only approach.

What if your CEO hasn’t heard from search firms? Is there another way for employees interested in corporate boards to get involved? With over 30 years of experience in recruiting for boards of large and small companies, Stanton Chase’s Edward J Savage is well-positioned to the answer that question.

“Be a hunter rather than a gatherer. Aggressively go out and promote yourself based upon your domain [industry or sector] knowledge, or functional knowledge,” says Edward. The Managing Director of Stanton Chase Los Angeles also emphasizes the importance of networking, adding that ninety-five percent of private or family-owned boards identify potential members this way.
